Homo “phobia”
We may not know the hundred things that may have happened in the duration of someone’s day that leads up to the end of it. What we are left with is the one thing that is shown to us.
Yesterday I was watching the News when the Dharun Ravi – Clementi case came up. It kind of gave me an idea on something that I could show that would be different from whatever I have painted so far. Taking Clementi’s story as inspiration, I painted this. While I am not condemning Mr.Ravi I am condemning targeting someone because they are different.
I do not, for one second, understand how it affects you if someone lives a life different to yours. If someone doesn’t even interfere in your life why should you interfere in his/hers? Imagine the pain that they feel when you condemn them for something that they are?
Stop condemning people because they are Black/White/Asian/Indian/Arab/European/anything else.
Stop condemning people because they speak a different language, follow a different religion or believe in things that are different from you.
If you believe that being a homosexual is wrong then you don’t be a homosexual. Don’t try to control other people’s lives with your opinions. that is wrong. and that should change.

The painting is titled “Coming Out” and depicts the way a society would react to someone coming out of the closet, be it gay or lesbian.
The above picture is taken without flash and the one below is taken with flash.

I painted it in abstract because I didn’t want anything to resemble anyone and because abstract is my style. But i believe that i have gotten my feelings across. Every society has a black sheep that tries to hurt others for their amusement. Every society has people in varying shades of grey, from the lightest grey to almost black. Every society has people who make it a point to show off that they are “men” and women who show off their prudish femininity. And every society has a few good people who accept you for who you are.
I hope to get two messages across with this painting.
Mr Clementi (father of the victim) made a statement at the end of the trial : “You’re going to meet a lot of people in your lifetime,” he said. “Some of these people you may not like. Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean you have to work against them. When you see somebody doing something wrong, tell them: ‘That’s not right. Stop it.’ The change you want to see in the world begins with you.”

- Don’t choose to end your life just because one person is targeting you and trying to make your life miserable. The world has so much more to offer and so many people who will not hate you for whom you love or any other reason since it is only one aspect of you.
- Don’t target someone just because they are different from you. If you feel uncomfortable about it move away. it is you who is feeling discomfort, not them. let them live their lives and you live yours. Don’t be a jerk and don’t think that you are so important that only your opinion should matter. And remember, NEVER, treat someone the way would not want to be treated.
